After a few posts about poetry and touchy-feely stuff, I felt like getting into some movie soundtrack stuff for a change. I’ve done War films, I’ve done Westerns. I was struggling to pick another genre. Then I realised that I can do whatever I want because this is my website. Therefore, this week, I decided to focus on the genre of ‘Arnold Schwarzenegger fights big aliens’ films. Granted, there aren’t many films to choose from, but one did come to mind…
Predator (1987) – composer – Alan Silvestri
Alan Silvestri (born in New York in 1950) has a very impressive back catalogue that stretches from the late 1970’s, where he started with TV shows like CHiPs, Manimal and TJ Hooker, to today – everything from Romancing the Stone and Back to the Future to being the mainstay composer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has been a regular collaborator with director Robert Zemeckis and has been nominated for two Academy Awards.

His score for Predator was his first after the massive success of Back to the Future and it was his first major action film. He gave himself a bank of trademarks in the score that he has gone on to use extensively in his other works: timpani rolls, horn blasts etc. I just love this theme that I’ve chosen this week. Hope you do too.
Thanks for reading and listening.
If you feel like some more music, then please check out some of my other Monday Music posts. They’re packed with great examples of music from movies, TV and other places.
