I’m carrying on with my favourite musicals for a couple more weeks. The next one on my list is another one that I remember watching a lot when I was young. It was one of Mum’s favourites and the cassette soundtrack was a regular fixture in her little Ford Fiesta…
Grease
(or Vaselina if you happened to live in Mexico at the time of release)
Here are some of my favourite songs from the film. Did you know that, for a while, it was the third highest grossing film of all time behind Star Wars and Jaws?
You’re the one that I want was filmed in a single afternoon. Olivia Newton John had to be sewn into her costume because of a broken zip.
John Farrar’s Hopelessly Devoted to You was added after filming was complete. Olivia Newton John was brought back in to film extra scenes because they felt that they wanted a strong ballad for Sandy (and also she had a contractual entitlement to a solo song). It went on to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, losing out to Donna Summer singing Last Dance from Thank God It’s Friday.
Director Randal Kleiser reportedly hated the opening song, feeling it was too dark in tone, but he didn’t feel like he had the power to have it removed.
And I love this one too. It reminds me of Jive Hive at Cardiff University. Wednesday nights, 1994-1997!
Well, that’s that. My first Monday Music of 2019.
