Last time I started my look at my favourite musicals with West Side Story.
This week, and for the last Monday Music post of 2018, it’s something very different.
Dr Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog
I just love how ‘thrown together’ this feels, even though it was done very professionally by Joss, Jed and Zak Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. They were looking for some way to still do some work during the writer’s strike of 2007/8. It won so many awards and was a trailblazer in the online streaming video market. It also won almost universal acclaim from critics and fans alike and went on to make over $3million, all going back to the cast and crew who had been unable to work at the time.
Neil Patrick Harris, a broadway star in his own right leads a great cast including Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion who clearly enjoy themselves with the material. Here are some of my favourite songs…
I was already a fan of Whedon’s ability to put together musical numbers after the Buffy episode, Once More with Feeling. The songs here are just the same quality. They even went a step further, making the DVD commentary a musical in its own right, Commentary, The Musical! with some very entertaining songs of its own, including Tancharoen’s satirical look at the lack of quality roles for Asians in Hollywood…
There is still talk of a sequel at some point. If that’s the case I can’t wait.
Thanks for reading. If you fancy some more random bits of music, click the links below. Otherwise, have a good week.
Thanks, Happy New Year!

I love Dr Horrible’s Singalong Blog! Whedon needs to do a full on big screen movie musical. Maybe that will stop the superhero fanboys from deriding his current film work. Or maybe not. 🙂
