Some of the Things – a poem for Holly

Hi there,

Another kind donation to my Acorns to oaks Poetry on Demand Challenge fundraiser. thank you very much to Holly who made the biggest donation yet and asked for a poem about joy or children. I went for joy. Took me a while, this one, but eventually I got into the spirit of things. So here it is – Some of the Things.

Some of the Things

In a deckchair listening to your favourite songs,

Thinking of rights instead of wrongs,

Air-conditioned rooms on a scorching holiday,

Your own bed after being away,

When you jump on the Tube and you’re heading to town,

The trailers are finished and the lights go way down,

Kick off at St. James’ beneath the floodlights,

Stargazing from a hot tub on cold, winter nights,

Fillet steak with peppercorn sauce

An icy can of coke on the side, of course,

Dancing leaves overhead giving shade,

That instant relief when you see you’ve been paid,

When the undercarriage leaves the ground,

And your children are laughing, what an awesome sound,

Your cat is purring and nuzzling you,

The welcome sight of a vacant loo,

You’re not in a hurry; there’s plenty of time,

And you finally came up with the perfect rhyme,

These are but some of my simple pleasures,

Things that I seek as occasional treasures,

But in some of these things, much less joy would I see,

If I wasn’t in love with one who loved me for me.

Well, there you have it. See, I can do upbeat poetry when I try. All the best. thank you again to Holly for the donation.

All the best, Richard
