Tonight’s Viewing – Predator: Killer of Killers

Hi everyone,

I didn’t know anything about this film until about a week ago. I found it on Disney+ last night and decided to give it a go. Here is my review.

If you’re a fan of the franchise, this animated anthology film is pretty special. It’s cinematic and has some really memorable, well-drawn characters, staying true to the intensity that made the original Predator a classic.

The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who already proved he knows his way around the Predator universe with the excellent Prey in 2022. He teams up here with Joshua Wassung (who worked on that film version of Ready Player One that I wasn’t a fan of) and the two of them do a fantastic job weaving together three different stories. Each one is set in a different historical time period and they build toward a finale that reminded me of several old Star Trek episodes. There are Viking warriors, samurai, and fighter pilots in World War 2.

Visually, Killer of Killers is stunning. The animation, created using Unreal Engine, is slick, visceral, and cinematic – a joy to watch, even for me who doesn’t watch much animation. It looks great, is very faithful to the franchise and doesn’t shy away from the gore, either.

The music is another standout. Composer Benjamin Wallfisch blends new themes with clever callbacks to Alan Silvestri’s original score, adding a good dollop of nostalgia that really hits the mark.

The voice cast is top-notch too. Aside from the leads, Michael Biehn shows up as Vandy (a nice surprise adding a bit of 80s authenticity). What was nice was feeling how seriously the project had been taken. Each story has a great hook and a good amount of emotional depth.

There’s also a brief tease of more to come involving a character in cryogenic storage – a moment that opens the door for even more crossover stories in the future.

If I had to sum it up: Predator: Killer of Killers was a great watch. It expands the mythology without losing the action, and it looks absolutely gorgeous doing it.

Cheers for reading,

Richard
