Dear all,
I’m posting this again; something I wrote a few years ago, in light of this week’s sad news.
I just took part in the 10 minute meditation that happened around the world involving many of us, and now seems like as good a time as any to share this.
When I was 14 years old, I turned on my portable black and white TV one evening and discovered a new world that seemed like it was all mine. It was a world that spoke to me and treated me like a grown up; where everything felt so familiar and yet so strange. I’ve told that story before and you can find it all in here.
The world was Twin Peaks and it had a profound impact on my life from that day to this. David Lynch and Mark Frost took me out of my room in Gosforth and transported me to somewhere breath-taking. Beyond this, as I became entranced with Lynch’s other work, lay a creative inspiration for me that has lasted all these years and will remain with me for the rest of my life.
The subtitle of my first book, Between Two Worlds, was a nod to the influence. It is an influence and inspiration which colours much of what I do, from the more obvious things like the haikus and other poems I’ve written, to the interactions of characters and the world I try to fashion in my stories. It resides, ever present on my shoulder, and is a great comfort.
I couldn’t find the quote online, but I remember he once said that ‘anyone who creates is a friend of his‘. If that is the case, then I am incredibly honoured to count myself amongst his friends, even if I never met the man. He has brought me to many great experiences and many dear friends, especially in the last few years.
I wanted t pick one of my haikus to fit the occasion, and I couldn’t find better than this one. It’s about Deputy Andy Brennan, but I think it fits David Lynch quite well too.
You’re a whole damn town
Wondrous heart without limit
Tuned to the pure light
All the best
Richard
